A movie about MADD and it's founder was released on NBC which brought an
increase of growth in chapters and media attention. |
 | 1984 The federal "21" minimum drinking
age bill is enacted. |

Canada becomes the first country to charter a MADD affiliate outside of the
US. |
MADD changes it's name to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. |
During this year MADD grows to more than 350 chapters. |
 | 1985 New Zealand and England start to
charter MADD affiliates. |

 | 1986 MADD trains volunteers on how to
help victims of drunk driving. |

Project Red Ribbon is brought about consisting of the giving of one million
red ribbons in the event that a motorist pledged to drive safe
and sober during the Christmas and New Year holidays. |

established for victim support |

 | 1988 The Ombnibus Anti-Drug Abuse Act was
signed. The Alcohol Beverage Labeling Act was also signed requiring
warnings on alcohol containers. |

Each of the 50 states agrees and passes the law to change the drinking age
to 21. |
 | 1991 Congress passed the Intermodal
Surface Transportation Efficiency Act which upholds the anti-DUI
legislation. |

The Transportation Employee Testing Safety Act passed which required testing
for both alcohol and drug testing for all employees in safety sensitive
jobs. |
 | 1992 MADD testifies on Capitol Hill on
the issues of funding for Section 410, grant programs, and sensible
advertising. |

 | 1993 The legal blood alcohol limit is now
.08 from .1. |

 | 1995 Drunk driving fatalities rise for
the first time in ten years. |

 | 1997 MADD hosted the International
Candelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope held at the National Cathedral in
Washington D.C. |

The Zero Tolerance legislation is passed in all 50 states. |
 | 1999 The MADD National Board of Directors
change the organization's mission statement to include the prevention of
underage drinking. |

 | 2000 MADD celebrates it's 20th
anniversary. |

 | 2002 MADD held a national news conference
on the impact of alcohol advertising on the world's youth. |
